2:2 the propitiation for our sins Refers to Jesus’ sacrificial death for the sins of humanity (compare Rom 3:25; Heb 9:5).

Propitiation has to do with the object of the expiation. -- expiation. The prefix ex means “out of” or “from,” so expiation has to do with removing something or taking something away. In Biblical terms, it has to do with taking away guilt through the payment of a penalty or the offering of atonement. The prefix pro means “for,” so propitiation brings about a change in God’s attitude so that He moves from being at enmity with us to being for us. Through the process of propitiation, we are restored into fellowship and favor with Him.

My seminary professor, Dr. Charles Ryrie, author of the Ryrie Study Bible, says concerning propitiation: "The Death of Christ accomplished Propitiation. The Need for it-- the wrath of God (Rom. 1:18). The meaning of it: God is satisfied with the death of Christ for sin. Scripture: 1 John 2:2.

A modern-day song called "His Robes for Mine" by Chis Anderson and Greg Habegger says this about propitiation:

His robes for mine: God’s justice is appeased. Jesus is crushed, and thus the Father’s pleased.
Christ drank God’s wrath on sin, then cried “‘Tis done!”Sin’s wage is paid; propitiation won.

Isaiah 53:10-11But the LORD was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand. As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities.

1 John 4:10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
