It's hard to imagine a being who was as close to God as Lucifer (Satan) was coming to believe that he could even do battle with God, much less defeat Him. Even the most depraved mind should be able...

Satan is basically the embodiment of complete and total hubris.

I think the encounter of Satan with God concerning Job is a perfect example of this. Job is basically both the wealthiest man on earth, and the most humble, God fearing man on earth. Do you think Satan has heard of this man? Do you think that Satan has despised and hated this man and has wanted nothing more than to humiliate and destroy Job? I would think so. Yet, up until this encounter God has completely protected Job, something Satan would have been painfully aware of.

But then one day, seemingly out of the blue, God asks Satan if he's considered His servant Job. Duh? I'm sure Satan was considering Job every day and really ticked that he couldn't do anything to him.

But just look at Satan's response! He goes into some sort of manipulative dialogue where I'm sure he walked away from the encounter believing that he had tricked God into allowing him to do those things to Job. Satan thinks himself so great, that today, even now, he thinks he can manipulate God to get his own way. Pure hubris.

Satan was ignorant, just like the prodigal son thought that his father would give him all of his inheritance to waste knowing fully well that he had foolishness inside of him and was not mature enough to handle real life (Luke 15:11-32). Satan thought that God had entrusted him with all of his secrets. Now the benefits of being the Anointed Cherub (Satan) were grand. Satan was the most beautiful creature created and his authority encompassed a great deal. Satan to God was was like Joseph was to Potiphar no one was grander and Lucifer knew it (Ezekiel 28:15).

But what Satan didn’t know was that God knew that he would pull the stunt he did. Also the Lord does not reveal all of his secrets to anyone Deuteronomy 29:29. Case and point: not even Jesus knows the day or hour of the Lords return

Satan knew he couldn't defeat the Creator, but he wanted to be on the same level as God (pride). Satan's job today is trick people into thinking that he is stronger than our Lord, just like he convinced the other angels that are kicked out with him. Satan's strongest weapon is deception.

Satan was one of God's highest angels, as a matter of fact He was an angel of light. Because of the position he held, pride sets in and he thought he could do what God does and as quoted in Isaiah 14:13-14 he said "I will ascend into the heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the farthest side of the north. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High" He led angels in rebellion against the most High, and he and his followers were cast out of heaven.
He is the originator of sin, a thief, a destroyer, murderer, liar and accuser. His present day activities include opposing the will and work of God, counterfeiting the work of God and destroying all that is good. This shows he is still fighting against God and what God stands for until the end of time; because God did not take away his power and authority when he was cast out of heaven.

In my view, Satan is not fighting God the Father per se. Satan is not an atheist; he knows God very well but it is against God the Son that he has issues.

That is why all false religions will "worship" God without a mention of Jesus. We know that without Jesus humanity and indeed all creation is doomed. In Rev 12:4, 7, 12 & 17.

Being an African and familiar with African traditional religions, I can testify that none of them profess atheism, but also none of them acknowledge Jesus Christ. The belief system is that you approach God through your own late father or grandfather who will pass the message to his father and so on until it gets to God. There is no place for Jesus in this chain.

Satan in my view did not have any illusions about defeating God the Father. He wanted to be at the same level as God the Son. In his mind, God the Son was lower than God the Father in divinity and he had a chance to compete for that position.
