I believe that the pastor's husband or wife, whichever it may be, is pretty much the combination of a Christian's role and a spouse's role. A pastor is not a magician and a spouse, regardless the career of their husband/wife, is not an assistant. Christians don't come in levels of most cherished by God to least so the role of the spouse is pretty much the role of any devoted lay-person in the church if they identify as such. The pastor is in charge of the sermons but there are so many other things to be done in the church.

As a husband or wife, their job is to be a support for the other to rely on because even pastors need people to help them as they go through the same life struggles as everyone else. Especially if the pastor's husband or wife has a career of their own, settling down might spark conflict if the pastor is one that is expected to move every few years. In this point, the pastor and spouse need to communicate one another to determine what's best for their partnership.

That's essentially what the pastor and his/her spouse is: a partnership. They should share so many of the same duties because they should work as one. Obviously, when it comes to their occupation, their jobs will be different but when working through life, the job of any husband or wife is to communicate with their spouse and support them in any way they can as they both go through life as one.
