Your soul is composed of your mind, will, intellect, emotions, etc. Your spirit is not your soul. You ARE a SPIRIT, you possess a soul and you've in a body. The Bible instructs us not to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our mind to the Word of God, daily.

You are a SPIRIT. You possess a soul, and you live in a body. You're body is the earth suit that houses your Spirit and soul. At the time of death the body is the only thing that dies. The spirit and soul lives on forever in either Heaven or hell which is our choice that can only be made from this side of the grave.

In answer to your query, as human beings of flesh and blood we are not actually capable of the restoration of our own souls. We can’t forgive ourselves--well actually we can, but what I mean is that the life we live is sinful and worldly. The sins we commit we can’t forgive; only God can do this. The Creator sent His Son Jesus Christ into the world, not to condemn the world, but so through Him the world might be saved or have everlasting life. He is the only way, the truth and the light that our souls may be quickened.

By the blood of Christ, that He shed through torture and death, and pure unconditional love, we can be led back to Him and through Christ the Son to the Father. Because of that sacrifice, we have been given the most important grace and blessing of all, we actually can, through Jesus, talk and ask for forgiveness from the Father.

Before Christ came as the Lamb of God to be sacrificed at Calvary this wasn’t possible. We couldn’t just pray, as we do today, to the Father and expect to be heard. But Christ paved the way; He bridged the gap between the reprobate life we live with the spiritual existence of the Creator, the "I AM”, making it possible for us to ask or request forgiveness from God.

The only way to the Father is through The Son, and by His blood are we cleansed--that is, if we want forgiveness or for our soul to become as it was. I hope this helps in answering your question.
