Many are just like that rich young ruler. He wanted to be justified before God by keeping Gods laws, or his own works of righteousness. In truth he was just self righteous as were all the Pharisees. Jesus gave him a law he could not or would not do, to sell all that he had and follow Jesus. He wanted to establish his own righteousness by what he did instead of trusting in Jesus. Many compare themselves to others and say I am better than that believer that lives down the street. If he is going to heaven then I should go too. Many believe their good works will save them. If I love God and my neighbor I will be saved. That is how a believer aught to live, but it can not save you. Many believe they are to bad to be saved. Many believe they are already good enough. All of our excuses will do us no good when we stand before the Lord. Many will tell of all the good works they did, and how they even cast out demons in Jesus name. But God says depart from me I never knew you. Many are trusting in their keeping the commandments to save themselves. Many believe that Jesus has forgiven them for their sins, but they have never accepted Him as their savior. In order to be saved we have to have the righteousness of Christ which only comes through the spirit when we put our trust in Jesus alone by faith. The good news of the gospel is that we are saved by faith in Christ alone with nothing from us. That His finished work on the cross is all that is necessary to save sinners. And it can only be accepted as a free gift. No works are required for salvation or can be added. If we add one of our own works to what Christ did, then we have taken His glory and given it to us. God will not accept our works. Only His work. We are saved by grace, through faith, without works, so that no one can boast. We did nothing to save ourselves and can do nothing to save ourselves. Only Jesus can save us without any thing from us. Many believe if they stop smoking and drinking they will be saved. They are deceived. They are trusting in their works to save them. Many believe if they turn from their sin to God they will be saved. But only Jesus can save us. Many believe if they repent of sin they will be saved. If that would save us then Jesus died in vain. Repentance in the bible means to change your mind and believe the gospel of grace to be saved. Then the Holy Spirit of promise seals us unto the day of redemption. John 6:37-40 The good news is that you have to do nothing to be saved, Just accept Jesus as your only savior. It is by faith alone.
My opinion is : 1. They do not believe the Bible is the Truth. 2. They do not believe in a life after death. 3. They are ignorant. 4.. Some people think they are not good enough. 5. They do not believe in God. 6. Some people do not believe that Jesus was sent to wash our sins away. 7. Some people do not believe the story of creation. 8. Some people have other things as gods. 9. Some people think they are gods. I could go on and on and each individual will have a different type answer to this question. The reason I believe is that I trusted Jesus Christ as my personal Savior and the Holy Spirit that came to live in me confirmed that the Bible is the Truth and that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. He is the only Way to Eternal Life and I have a personal relationship with Him.
By God's will some are destined to salvation and some are not. If I could have saved myself, I would have; however I was spiritually dead, dead, dead. I "rejected" Christ for 38 years because I did not know God. Then He placed the Spirit in me and made me alive. He began to teach me who God is, who Christ is and who the Holy Spirit is. I did not choose Him, He chose me. He sanctifies me for service to Him in His name and for His glory forever. I am thankful for Christ who redeemed me; He paid the price that I could not pay. Now I know my destiny, and all things here are bearable. Seek and you will find Him.
My short answer is this: Because the devil has a hold on them --and-- "they are caught up in the cares OF this world..." --and-- "they love the things of this world, they love the passions of this world, they love the darkness, instead of the LIGHT! --and, "They love the desires of their fleshly heart, which is through Adam's sin, they are led astray by their evil lusts of the flesh and the things OF this world". Satan is the master tempter, the master deceiver, the master liar, the master of evil: simply, he is the Devil. People reject Jesus as their savior because they resist and resist and resist because "the cares OF this world" has overtaken their heart, desires and interests" and they have left no room for "God's Eternal Truth, God's Word!" ~~Andy~~
Why don't people get saved? In II Corinthians 3:3-4 it says, "But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost (perishing): In whom the god of this world (Satan, the Devil) hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, Who is the image of God, should shine unto them. We need to witness; to share to Gospel (the Good News) that all are accountable to God, that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, but "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16
There are several reasons why people rejects our Lord and Savior: 1. Disobedient-Man was born with a disobedient spirit and therefore must be born-again. (Adam &Eve) (Gen:Chp2) 2. Sacrifice: As in the early days of the church- many people rejected the disciples and later Jesus because they were told they had to give up the pleasures (fornication, adultery, righteous living etc.) of the world-The did not accept the fact that they had more to gain than to loose. This remains true today.(Luke Chp16) 3. Consequences: The punishment for doing wrong is not immediately administered by Jesus--However, we as believers know that day is coming. Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess Jesus(-Rom14:1. 4.False Teachers: There are those who profess to know God and yet they act, and talk like the world. Many immerse themselves in politics, money scheme, talk from both sides of their mouth and have no conviction--integrity! They become a stumbling block for many. (1Cor8:9) (Matthew 7:15)
I would say that most people believe that they are basically good and that any evil they have done will be forgiven. I think people believe that God is going to grade on a curve when it comes time for Judgment Day. That is, God will compare them with others, and some of the others are WAY WORSE than they are. Couple this with their belief that God is fair, and won't turn good intentions and effort away. However, there is a fallacy here that God is just and must punish sin in any form! (Romans 6:23 says "the wages of sin is death.") Someone has to pay for my sin, either me or a Substitute which God allows/allowed. That is Jesus, my Substitute! (Romans 5:8 says that God showed his love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us). But we must accept this gift of payment for our sins. Otherwise, it will do us no good. Repent and believe the Good News! That's what Jesus said.
My experience so far, since I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior, Is that people assume that we who have accepted him are failures in life, no progress, and frustrated too. So we are just running away from our frustrated situations. They justify themselves based on the wealth and claim they are already blessed.
When young milk-fed believers encounter serious hypocritical sin in the church body or leadership that reflects poorly on what it means to be a believer, they may end up rejecting the faith. As believers, we are called to talk the talk and walk the walk. Young or potential believers’ eyes are watching. If we are poor examples, they may walk away forever.
