Pride comes before a fall. God always responds to a humble and contrite heart. He will never respond to a person who is filled with worldly pride. We are to walk as Christlike through this world acting as Jesus did when he was on this earth as the only perfect man! We are to strive to be perfect as he was perfect, meaning that we are to love God with all our hearts - total commitment to Him and to love our neighbor even as Jesus loved all men even to giving his life in order that all men/women could be reconciled to his God and his Father.

Spiritual pride comes when we believe what we are doing for God is more important than what He did for us. In Luke 10:20 Jesus disciples came back telling how they cast out demons and did many wonderful works. But Jesus told them not to rejoice in that but that their names were written in heaven. We have nothing to boast in or take spiritual pride in, because before God no one is better than any one else. We are all sinners because we are not perfect. If we trust in our own righteousness, we are not trusting in the righteousness of God given to us when we trusted Christ as our savior. Self righteousness is sin. The only righteousness we have before God is the righteousness that He gave us. Romans 4:1 Abraham had nothing to glory in before God. Colossians 2:20-23 Spiritual pride comes when we believe the things we don't do create in us a greater sanctity than others. Romans 14:4 says, it better than I can. Doubtful things are not commandments of God and we are not to judge others on those things. Some have the freedom to use tobacco, drink in moderation, go to movies, dance, watch TV, dress modestly the way they believe is best for them, and a whole host of things that we can create within our selves a spiritual pride that only satisfies the flesh. Spiritual pride comes when we believe what we are doing for God is greater than what others are doing. They are just not living up to "MY" standard of holiness. Probably the best example of spiritual pride is the Pharisee that prayed with himself. I thank you oh God that I am not like these sinners. And it goes on how he is so wonderful in his own self righteousness because he keeps all of Gods laws perfectly and who needs a savior anyway. He trusted in his own righteousness instead of the righteousness that come by faith. Only the grace of God can save sinners. But many get all bent out of shape if you tell them they are sinners and only Jesus can save them. They believe their righteous good works will satisfy Gods requirement for salvation. If there was any other way to be saved than what Jesus did on the cross for us, then Jesus died for no reason. But your pride in your own righteousness will not let you humble your self as a mere sinner and accept Jesus as the only way to be saved. First John 1:8

The Bible says, that if you are loving, you will not cherish inflated ideas of your own importance. Some examples of pride in the Bible are: Ahithophel, 2 Sam. 17:23. Naaman, refusing to wash in Jordan, 2 Kings 5:11-13. Hezekiah, in displaying his resources, 2 Kings 20:13; 2 Chr. 32:31; Isa. 39:2. Uzziah, 2 Chr. 26:16-19. Haman, Esth. 3:5; 5:11, 13; 6:6; 7:10. Kings of Tyre, Ezek. 28:2. Nebuchadnezzar, Dan. 4:30-34; 5:20. Proverbs 16:18: Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before stumbling. Proverbs 11:2: When pride comes, then comes dishonor, But with the humble is wisdom. James 4:6: But He gives a greater grace. After three years in seminary, he felt adequately prepared, and when he was introduced to the congregation, he walked boldly to the pulpit, his head high, radiating self-confidence. But he stumbled reading the Scriptures and then lost his train of thought halfway through the message. He began to panic, so he did the safest thing: He quickly ended the message, prayed, and walked dejectedly from the pulpit, his head down, his self-assurance gone. Later, one of the godly elders whispered to the embarrassed young man, “If you had gone up to the pulpit the way you came down, you might have come down the way you went up.” The elder was right. God still resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.
