This is a complicated topic. In 1988, my Mom became very ill. I know that she was a smoker, as long as I can remember. She got a serious infection in her foot. She also had rheumatoid arthritis.
My mom had followed the case of Karen Ann Quinlan very closely. So, when the family was gathered to discuss a DNR order, it was decided to put one in place. We knew how she felt about Karen's case.
Anyway, I was with her at her last moment. She was leaving and very tired. She told me she wanted rest. I said it was o.k., just lay back. I stayed with her, I watched her "pass" and waited long enough before I called the nurse, who could not rouse her.
Anyway, question, how does anyone see a DNR order? Particularly when you know how the person feels. My mom, had her ups and downs during her illness, but at the finish, she was lucid. She had control, was not mentally ill.
