Someone once said, "We should work as if it all depends on us and pray like it all depended on God." I think that encapsulates the struggle that we often have. The old and new testaments often record examples of this. Jesus' example was one of great prayer and then doing great works, all for Gods glory not his own.
I think Ben Franklin got it wrong. I do not believe God helps those who help themselves, but rather, God helps those who help others. I believe when helping one's self to better affirm God's authority in a life, God's assistance can be seen, but self serving efforts are fueled only by self. God helps everyone to cause opportunity for conversion. He even tells us, seek ye first the kingdom of God and all these thing shall be added unto you. Though the things to be added are not defined, we can be assured that they are categorically supportive for a closer walk with God. I believe this may be the one aspect where God helps a person to help themselves escape doom. Dean Donahue, Show Low, Arizona
