Scribes were officially interpreters of the Old Testament and viewed themselves as guardians of the Jewish tradition. They were a guild of scholars skilled in handling written documents and duties include teaching, interpretation and regulation of the law. The key point in Matthew 9:3 is that the Scribes considered Jesus' pronouncement of forgiveness to be blasphemous since only God can forgive. They did not understand that Jesus, son of man, son of God, is God.

Scribes were observers and interpreters of the Law. They thought that what Jesus was did in Matthew 9:1-2 was blasphemy because he did work on the Sabbath day.

Fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah, God intends to show us the true genuinity of compassion and of our love for Him with all our hearts,not just by lips, as Jesus quoted from Isaiah 29:13-14 And the Lord said:"Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips,while their hearts are far from me,and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men, therefore, behold, I will again do wonderful things with this people, with wonder upon wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden." just as in Matthew 15:8-9 "'This people honors me with their lips,but their heart is far from me; Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God. The scribes were significant in the sense that God wants us to live out His glory through the very acts of mercy demonstrated by the Lord and not just by merely obeying the precepts and boasting about the teachings, but not living by them wholeheartedly. They, along with their Pharisaic counterpart, as well as other figures( protagonists and antagonsits alike) mentioned in the Bible, all do one thing; 'catalysts' and 'fuels' to the proclamation of the Glory of God once again; due to our fallen nature of our pride in the past , we could not do so . However, because of the Love of God towards his servant, Israel, he sent his only Son, not only to Israelites alone, but now the spectrum is broader, it is also to the world.
