Dear Anonymous, in the context of this verse, the Greek meaning of the word "abide" is meno, which means "to remain, stay, or continue."

It speaks of our permanent union with God the Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

It is the same word that is used in John chapter 15, where Jesus teaches His disciples about the relationship between the True Vine and the branches. He is the True Vine and we are the branches.

Jesus is the Source of eternal life, and we live because we are connected to Him.

What Does "Abide in Him" Mean in the Context of 1 John 2:6?

1 John 1:2-6 says "Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked." (NKJV).

To abide in Christ is to walk in submission to His teachings and commands and in fellowship with His Spirit. This is how the word of God influences and shapes our worldview. John labels the disobedient believer as a liar in whom the truth of God's word does not dwell. The obedient believer however keeps God's word and abides in Christ.

The significance of God's word on the life of the believer is outlined in several texts and passages of Scripture. Psalm 119 is perhaps one of the most explicit passages of Scripture that celebrate the divine influence of God's word on the life of the believer. Psalm 119:105 says "Your word is a lamp to my feet
And a light to my path." (NKJV). The psalmist proclaims that the word of God guides his path in life.

To abide in Christ is to discern His leading through the pages of Scripture and to apply these truths to the circumstances of our practical Christian living. A believer who walks with Christ in truth will discern His will for his life in practically every circumstance and draw inspiration and direction from God's holy word.

Scripture conveys the mind of God to all covenant people in every human civilization. The voice of Christ is indelibly encrypted in Scripture. He is our final prophet (Hebrews 1:1-2). The more we spend time studying the word of God in Scripture, the more we are deepened in the knowledge of Christ and are better able to navigate the terrains of life.

We should therefore allow the Scriptures to illuminate our paths of life and in this way we shall securely abide in Christ in this world and in the life to come.
