Are we Christ’s sheep because we believe, or do we believe because we are his sheep?

John 10:26 NKJV
But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you. John 10:27-28 NKJV
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. [28] And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.

ESV - ¹ Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. ² But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
