Although Revelation does in portions use imagery and symbolic language, Jesus had previously said during His life on earth that the end times preceding His return would be marked by (among other things) "great earthquakes" (Luke 21:11). In addition, in Luke 23:28-31, Jesus Himself had used the exact wording conveyed in Revelation 6:16 in speaking to the women of Jerusalem who were weeping for Him as He was proceeding to His crucifixion concerning events that would occur in the future (which had even also previously been prophesied by Hosea 10:8).
