As I understand it: Zion (meaning "highest point" or "landmark") was a hill in Jerusalem -- specifically the easternmost hill of ancient Jerusalem -- where King David captured the Jebusite city. The term "city of David" refers to the original site upon which the city was built, including the Gihon Spring and the Siloam tunnel, by means of which water was obtained. It was situated on the southern part of the eastern ridge of ancient Jerusalem, west of the Kidron Valley and east of the Tyropoeon Valley, and just south of the Temple Mount. (The term was also used in Scripture to refer to Bethlehem (where David was born), as noted by the angel in announcing Jesus' birth to the shepherds in Luke 2:11.) "Jerusalem" encompassed the entirety of the city of that name.
Genesis 14:18: And Mel-chiz’-dek king of Sa’-lem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. This was the land of the Canaanites, sons of Ham, who was Canaan, who begat Si’-don and Heth. These were the families of whom were the Jeb’-u-site, Am’-or-ite, Gir’-ga-site, Hi’-vite, Ark’-ite, Si’-nite, Ar’-vad-ite, Zem’-a-rite, and the Ha’-math-ite, who were then spread abroad. (Gen 10:6,15-18) God the Father spoke to Abraham and led him out into the Promised Land of Canaan, knowing that his father, Nahor, was worshiping idols at that time. (Gen 12:6-7/Jos 24:2-3) Abraham’s son, Isaac, and his son, Jacob, after taking the blessings of his brother Esau from his father, Isaac, left the presence of his father and went towards Haran as his mother told him to go to Laban, her brother. (Gen 27:43) As he moved out that night, when he came to a certain place where he slept, he had a dream. And the Lord appeared unto him and told him, "The land where thou liest, to thee will I give it and to thy seed." When Jacob woke from his sleep, he said, "How dreadful is this place! This is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven," and he called the place Beth’-el. (Gen 28:17-19) Jacob was then given Ra’-chel, the daughter of Laban, to be his wife. In the beginning, she bore no children, and she gave her sister Leah, whom she envied, who bore children; then she gave her maid Bil’-ah, who bore children to Jacob. God the Father then remembered Ra’-chel and hearkened to her and opened her womb, and she bore a son and called him Joseph. Jacob was then told by the Lord to return to his father in the land of Canaan. Jacob went on his way, and he wrestled with a man who prevailed not against him, and he asked for a blessing. As a prince, he had the power with God. The man who wrestled with him said, "Thy name shall no more be Jacob, but Israel, as a prince has thou power with God." Jacob then journeyed from Beth’-el, Ra’-chel then travailed in hard labour, and she bore a son called Benjamin. (Gen 29:27,31/30:1,22-34/31:18/32:24-25,28/35:18) Melchizedek, the king of Salem, was where the king reigned, which was traditionally referred to as Salem, which today we refer to as “Jeru’-Salem”, where Melchizedek was a king. The city of David was, and is, situated near Jerusalem, the chosen city of David, as it had the Gihon Spring, located on the Kidron Valley side of Jerusalem, which was a natural spring flowing through the land. (Gen 2:13/1 Kings 1:33-34) The land of Canaan, where the Jeb’-u-sites were, when David began to reign, he went with his men to Jerusalem, unto the Jeb’-u-sites, the inhabitants of the land, and took a strong hold of Zion, which was then called the city of David. (2 Sam 5:7/1 Chro 11:4-7) This is where the Temple Mount is, which is a significant site. As Abraham was told to take his son Isaac to the land of Mo-ri’-ah to offer him as a burnt offering upon one of the mount, and he built an altar there, which is located in Jerusalem. (Gen 22:2,9,18/John 8:56) Genesis 22:18: And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
