I would say that the reference to "death" is not speaking of temporal death, but of the eternal separation from God that will be experienced by the unredeemed at the "day of wrath" spoken of in the cited verse -- the final judgment from God against earthly sin that will occur at the close of the present age. At that time, what will matter is not the wealth that people have accumulated during their earthly lives, but the imputed righteousness in God's sight that could be acquired only through faith in Christ's atoning death and resurrection for the forgiveness of their sins.
