In my opinion the point of the word pictures that the psalmist used in this psalm was to describe the goodness of God through His creation. The psalmist probably chose these because they best described how he saw the divine nature of his Creator. He describes the height and the depth of God's love for His creation by His mercy, faithfulness, and righteousness. The Lord preserves and protects! He is trustworthy and pours out His provision abundantly to satisfy the children of men. He is the fountain of life and the light by which we see!
Psalm 36 is a wisdom psalm. It contrasts verses 1-4, with verses 5-9. In this particular psalm, the prophet David, (Acts 2:30) gives divine insight into the nature of wickedness (see 1-4). David then discloses the Love of the Lord, his righteousness and mysteries, and true judgements. Psalm 36:6: "...O Lord your judgements are a great deep.." Genesis 1:2: "The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters." I believe the point is to try to help us understand the wickedness of man and the complete perfection of God. That is a real stretch for me, however much I try. I understand the human part, and I know God is SUPER PERFECT FROM ANY STANDPOINT, but still hard grasp. I just accept that HE is the I Am, that I need.
