Why wasn’t the psalmist afraid of powerful and wicked people? (Psalm 49:5–9)
5 Why should I fear in times of trouble,
when the iniquity of those who cheat me surrounds me,
6 those who trust in their wealth
and boast of the abundance of their riches?
7 Truly no man can ransom another,
or give to God the price of his life,
8 for the ransom of their life is costly
and can never suffice,
9 that he should live on forever
and never see the pit.

This same thought is expressed multiple times in the Psalms, such as in Psalm 23:4 and Psalm 118:6 (to name just two). The psalmist (David or otherwise) was contrasting the power of God and the protection that He provides, even when confronted by formidable enemies, with the relative transience and ineffectiveness from an eternal perspective of whatever the source of those enemies' strength might be (physical stature, wealth, or any other earthly consideration). Despite their resources, they will experience the same mortality as all other humans.
