The synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) each record multiple separate instances in which Jesus Himself told the apostles of the interval between his death and resurrection, as follows:

Matthew 12:40 16:21, 17:23, 20:19
Mark 8:31, 9:31, 10:34
Luke 9:22, 18:33

This interval was significant because it was a fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy from Hosea 6:2, and (as noted by Jesus Himself in Matthew 12:40) Jonah 1:17.

In addition, it also allowed for observance of the Sabbath between Good Friday and Easter as a day of rest in accordance with the Law.

"The disciples had forgotten that Jesus promised to rise from the dead on the third day, but His enemies remembered. (Matthew 27)" --Warren Wiersbe

Shame on us. This is crucial to the gospel.

Without the resurrection on the third day, we have an incomplete gospel. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
New English Translation

3 "For I passed on to you as of first importance what I also received—that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, 4 and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures."

The gospel then is made up of 3 things: Jesus' death, burial & resurrection on the 3rd day. I am assuming that we all want to go to Heaven when we die. We must believe in the resurrection of Jesus on the 3rd day then.

Is it any wonder that Third Day was a popular Christian rock band? And that they based their name on 1 Corinthians 15:4? However, they retired in 2018. But their music lives on.
