Why has Christianity portrayed Jesus as White?

The Bible provides clear evidence that Jesus should be portrayed as a dark brown-skinned man.

As a descendant of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and Abraham being from Ur of the Chaldeans, Jesus was likely middle- to light-brown. But many cultures portray him as their particular color (not just Christianity, and not just white), as an ideal.

In any case, it's not important, which is why scripture doesn't give details about his appearance beyond his suffering and crucifixion in his mortal body. His risen form was sometimes seen as "normal", while his exalted form (e.g. Revelation) was much different: brightly shining, white hair, etc.
