I would say that human sin causes people to want to exert control over their own lives rather than to acknowledge the existence of a higher spiritual being whom they cannot see or touch, and whom they do not and cannot control. As a result, they turn to idols as objects of worship, futilely believing that those idols have the power possessed by the true God.

(Also, idols need not be tangible objects. Any aspect of a person's life that the person places ahead of God (such as money, prestige, personal or professional success, or the acclaim of others) becomes an idol for that person.)
