Why was it necessary to record the mother's name of most newly appointed kings in the OT?
Examples: Ahaziah-Athaliah, Joash-Zibiah, Amaziah-Jehoaddan, Uzziah-Jechiliah, Jotham-Jerusha, Hezekiah-Abijah. Then from Manasseh on (ch.34 and following) ...strangley no mothers are mentioned.
2 Chronicles 22:1 - 29:36
ESV - 1 And the inhabitants of Jerusalem made Ahaziah, his youngest son, king in his place, for the band of men that came with the Arabians to the camp had killed all the older sons. So Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah reigned. 2 Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Athaliah, the granddaughter of Omri.

Deuteronomy 30:19: "I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; (verse 20), that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers..." The Bible, all of it, is for our learning, correction. Romans 15:4. 1 Kings16:30: "Now Ahab, the son of Omri, did evil in the sight of the Lord, more than all who were before him." Go back even farther. 1 Kings 11:1: "But King Solomon loved many foreign women, as well as the daughter of Pharaoh." Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidoians Hittites... Remember the Lord had specifically told Solomon, 1 Kings 11:2: " You shall not Intermarry with them, nor they you, they will turn away your hearts after other gods." 1 Kings 11:11: "Therefore the Lord said to Solomon, 'Because you have done this, and have not kept My covenant, and My statutes, which I have commanded you...(1 Kings 13) I will give one tribe to your son, for the sake of David and for Jerusalem whom I have chosen.'" Go back even further, look at Deuteronomy 8:19: "Then it shall be if you by any means forget the Lord your God..." Check out Deuteronomy 12:8 - 11: " You shall not at all do as we are doing here today, every man doing what is right in his own eyes for as yet, you have not come to your inheritance...". (Good advice for today also!) So why record all the mothers' names? The men married a lot of women for political advantages, and had many children from these relationships. Many different mothers. One father. God had warned: Genesis 2:24,25; Ecclesiastes 3:12,13; Matthew 12:25; Hebrews 13:4; and Hebrews 13:7. So, some of all the trouble began and it continues... But Jesus was in Samaria one day and He asked a woman for a drink of water. The woman said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman?" Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me, a drink,' you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water." (John 4:9,10) Are we asking Him, listening to Him today? Satisfying our thirst?
