Why did the people stone someone they had earlier wanted to worship (Acts 14:8-20)?

I believe that when Paul and Barnabas convinced the people that they were not "Jupiter and Mercurius", the people then decided they should be killed. To the people, Paul and Barnabas were portraying themselves as being frauds to their gods. This is just my opinion, and there are others on this site whom I believe may provide a more accurate answer.
