Does God expect us to be happy (Psalm 100:2)?

Psalm 100:2 Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!

In one sense, I would say "no," God doesn't expect us to be happy -- He rather expects us to be holy. That's His goal for us. Now if happiness comes along the way I'm sure He would not be opposed to it.

I agree Jack! There is also a difference in joy and happiness. Look at the life of Paul (post-salvation), who was/is to be our example today (1 Tim 1:16, 1 Cor 4:16, 1 Cor 11:1, Phil 3:17). The man was beaten, stoned, shipwrecked, etc..., but still possessed true joy in knowing where he stood with God by God's grace...which was ultimately "sufficient" (2 Cor 12:7-9).

2 Cor 12:10
"Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong."

I can't imagine Paul being "happy" while being stoned to near death, but those seeking his demise had zero power over the inner joy he maintained in being in Jesus Christ!

Amen, and eloquently said, Mark! I love 2 Cor 12:10.
