My understanding is that, despite the traditional attribution of the Biblical book of Lamentations to the prophet Jeremiah, and although the destruction of Jerusalem by Babylon in 586/7 BCE did indeed form the background of Lamentations, modern scholarship disputes Jeremiah's authorship, and maintains instead that each of the book's chapters was likely written by a different anonymous poet, and were then joined to form the book as it now appears in Scripture.
