Although a pain-free death from a physical standpoint could understandably be desired by both Christians and non-Christians, when Paul refers to death's "sting", I interpret him as speaking from a spiritual perspective regarding the inevitability of being separated from God for eternity as the penalty for sin for those who have not been saved by faith in Christ. I think that he himself makes this clear when he directly says in 1 Corinthians 15:56 that the sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the Law. (That is, the requirements of the Law make it clear that no one (other than Christ) is capable of totally fulfiulling them (Romans 3:20).) In addition, any length or degree of physical suffering in this life pales in comparison to the joy and peace that await the redeemed in eternity.
