How is the “darkness passing away” considering this was written more than 1900 years ago and the darkness still seems as strong as ever?

1 John 2:8

1 John 2:7 - 14

ESV - 7 Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard. 8 At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.

John 1:4-5 says, "In him was life, and the life was the light of mankind. And the light shines on in the darkness, but the darkness has not mastered it." (NET)

So since Jesus brought the light, the darkness has been passing away ever since. It still shines, in however many or few people. We know also that very dark times are predicted before Jesus returns, but that he never fails to have a witness (light) to the end (Mat. 28:20)
