In my opinion, creation of the water was one of the first actions by God falling under the scope of Genesis 1:1 ("In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.") The presence of darkness (which was not created, but pre-existing) was attributable to the fact that God had not yet transferred the light that characterizes His domain to the dimension in which creation was taking place. (That transfer occurred in Genesis 1:3, after which God separated the light from the darkness, as noted in Genesis 1:4.)

The obvious answer is that we are not told where or how darkness and light were separated.

We do know, that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth as stated in Genesis 1:1.

Then some cataclysmic event happened. See Jeremiah 4:23 - 26. Also read Isaiah 24:1: "Behold, the Lord maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof."

This tells us that something serious caused God to begin again. This is all we know. Notice a careful reading of Genesis chapter one reveals that God created, God called, God made, God blessed...God always gives us all the information we need.

We are naturally curious. But, we cannot understand a lot of things. God's mind is so far above our understanding.

God expects us to have faith in His word. There are two absolutes in scripture.

Romans 3:25: "Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His Blood, to declare His righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God."

It is not about me, its all about Him. God said it, so I believe it.
