Rough garments were the garb of prophets. John the Baptist was a poor, rugged, holy man.

John the Baptist was fulfilling prophecy: "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD." Malachi 4:5

"... "A hairy man wearing a leather belt around his waist."... "It is Elijah the Tishbite." " 2 kings 1:8

"And if you are willing to receive it, he (John the Baptist*) is Elijah who is to come." Matthew 11:14

Jewish believers would have recognized John as being Elijah just by his clothes. Nowhere else in the Bible is anyone dressed like this.

*Parentheses was added for clarification.

Yes David, I am no theology scholar, but the Lord has His believers seeking after Him, and from studying this one I wondered too and sensed from the Spirit the clothing represent one seperate from the rest of the world, John represents Christ and not the world.

The camel can endure days in scorching hot deserts while transporting precious cargo...

John the baptist wearing this camel hair symbolizes John's purpose:

1: He is found in the desert, he is to endure the scorching hot weather; this is what the camel does it can endure this type of weather.
2: The camel carries precious cargo. John, too, is carrying precious cargo (God's message).
