I find the Amplified Bible's expansion upon Paul's statement in Ephesians 6:4 to be useful in regard to the question. It provides the following commentary: "Do not exasperate them [that is, your children] to the point of resentment with demands that are trivial or unreasonable or humiliating or abusive; nor by showing favoritism or indifference to any of them." This recognizes that children may (I might even say "will") become angry at their parents at times (even when the parents are engaging in a legitimate exercise of their parental authority in the children's best interest), but provides guidance to those parents to prevent them from needlessly or purposely provoking such anger for trivial or selfish reasons.
