I believe that the death that the Lord spoke of was both natural and spiritual. Adam lived to be 930 and then he died. Genesis 5:5.

The day that Adam and Eve ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, it brought about a spiritual death. Meaning that their disobedience separated them from God.

We see a type of spiritual death in chapter three of Genesis, verses 22-24, when the LORD God sent Adam and Eve out of the garden of Eden, so that they would not have the opportunity to eat from the tree of life. 

Spiritual death means to be eternally separated from God. 

Their disobedience caused their fellowship with the Lord to be broken, and caused them to become spiritually blind. They were no longer walking in the light. The Bible tells us that there is no fellowship between light and darkness. 

We come into this world spiritually dead, or separated from God. We were dead in trespasses and sin, but God has made us alive through Christ Jesus. Ephesians 2:1.

Thank God for Jesus, who has redeemed us and restored the fellowship between God and mankind. But we must believe in His death, burial, and resurrection to receive the forgiveness of our sins!

Genesis 1:26 KJVS:
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: 

God made man in His image. 
God the father = intelligence, 
God the Son = flesh, 
God the Holy Spirit = the spiritual essence of God.
Man = Brain, intellect; 
Body, flesh; 
Soul, spiritual essence.

Genesis 2:17 KJVS:
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

God said that on the day Adam and Eve ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they would surely die. So what died the day Adam and Eve sinned? Not their mind or body, but the soul died. Mankind’s spiritual essence died, disconnecting spiritually from God. Everyone is spiritually dead when born. Man is born with a mind, a body, and a dead soul.

John 3:2 KJVS:
The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, “Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.”

John 3:3 KJVS”
Jesus answered and said unto him, “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

When we accept Christ we become born again. Our soul is reborn spiritually.
The Holy Spirit indwells our reborn soul, opening our eyes to spiritual life and growth. We literally become a new creation. Mind, body, and a living reborn soul. No one can pluck my salvation away. My inheritance was gained the minute my soul was reborn spiritually.

What a God and Savior we worship.

We can learn the meaning of the phrase "in the day" by comparing scripture with scripture (1 Cor. 2:13).

Let's look at an earlier verse in Genesis.
Genesis 2:4: "These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens."

God uses the phrase "in the day" to indicate the time frame that the earth and the heavens were created. This then characterizes the phrase as being a period of time rather than a single definitive day. This is also supported by seeing that verse 17 of Genesis 2 is a summarization verse of the previous verses detailing each day of God's creation.

In summary, God did not tell Adam that he would drop dead at the moment of eating the fruit. The implication is that Adam would die during those days... which he did (Genesis 5:5).

"But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day." (2 Peter 3:8).

"For a thousand years in Your sight
Are like yesterday when it passes by,
Or as a watch in the night." (Psalm 90:4).

GOD Is 'eternal' and Exists outside of time's constraints. When GOD spoke these words to Adam and his wife, they too were 'eternal.' GOD never intended for them to be trapped inside of time, ripped apart by decay while being driven along by it and finally destroyed. That all began only AFTER they fell into a state of sin apart from GOD and His holiness.

In fact, Adam and Eve were never designed to procreate a physical 'race' of people since everything a 'Human' (made in GOD's direct likeness) could be, they already were. You can imagine 'The Human' as a completed thought of GOD, made up of equal parts male and female qualities. They were a perfectly united 'Congregation' that was so intimately interwoven that each spiritual 'person' functioned more like part of a Body rather than as a separate individual. 

How do we know this? Scripture describes this same relationship between Christ, (the 'Last Adam' 1 Corinthians 15:45), and His Bride the Church, (the new 'Eve,' Ephesians 5:25-33). In the same way that 'every person who can exist, did exist' inside Adam and his wife, so every person redeemed by Christ makes up His Church, His Body. 

1 John 2:18 tells us that we are living in the 'last hour.' We have been living out this 'hour' now for 2,000 years. That is the perspective of GOD. So when GOD told Adam that 'on the day you eat of it [that is, the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil], you will surely die,' that is exactly what happened...from GOD's perspective.

Adam and his wife instantly lost eternal life, found themselves inside a great and endless chasm, (the same one mentioned in Luke 8:31, Luke 16:26, Romans 10:7, Revelation 9, Revelation 20, etc...) trapped on a 'space rock' hurling towards a certain and fiery oblivion, driven along by time and decaying with each passing moment. They were no longer 'complete' and their perfectly united 'persons' were separated and began to be physically 'born' through a very painful process over successive generations, each dying after a short and difficult lifespan filled with hard work just trying to survive. This is the 'curse' GOD mentions in Genesis 3:16-19.

Those cursed 'persons' include you and me. We are born part of the 'First Adam' and his ongoing 'death.' However, thanks be to GOD that He Himself came to our rescue as the 'Last Adam' in the Person of Jesus Christ. We each must recognize our rightful punishment and current condition of judgment, no longer trying to find a way of 'escape' on our own or some way to 'reunite' ourselves in defiance against GOD for punishing us.

Unfortunately, that is what much of the human world is still trying to do. It is even trying right now to escape out into the great and endless chasm they call 'space' in the hope of somehow avoiding GOD's judgment. They are still listening to the 'serpent' when he tells them that GOD is a liar and that they 'will not surely die,' (Genesis 3:4). They have even transformed him into a supposedly great and powerful 'Dragon' in their minds as they struggle along with him against GOD, (Revelation 12:4, 20:2, etc...).

GOD's justice cannot ultimately be avoided, but we can genuinely escape from His wrath by instead admitting that we did evil and that we deserve to be in our terrible situation; that we can also be forgiven and find ourselves safe once again and living in eternal life with GOD as a fully united Body. We can only do this through Christ Jesus. That is the heart of the gospel, the 'good news' which He has announced to the entire world.

"There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12).

Dave Mohler Preacher's kid.

The original language for verse 17 "...you shall surely die." is a present tense phrase meaning "dying, you shall die." Total physical death was not immediate; I agree with others that what is illustrated by physical death is spiritual death which must be atoned for to produce new life.
