The reason to quote the Word of God in difficult situations is the best way to fend off Satan and his minions. This is demonstrated clearly by Jesus during His temptation after being driven into the wilderness by the Spirit of God. He was very hungry after fasting 40 days and 40 nights; then the devil suggested that he turn some stones into bread in order to eat them. Jesus then said, “It is written, ’Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:4). 

We, as Spirit-filled, born-again Christians, are instructed to put on the “full armor of God”, that we might be able to have victory over the darts of the enemy. This armor includes the “Sword of the Spirit” (signifying the power of the Word to fight against the darts of the enemy), and “the shield of faith” (signifying the protection of the Word against the darts of the enemy). These scriptures alone show the importance of using God’s Word to protect yourself and fight against the enemy, a fight which is not physical but one fought in the heavenlies.

In John 14:26, Jesus said that a function of the Holy Spirit would be to bring to His followers' remembrance all that He had said.

Also, Paul said in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 that "all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

In addition, although it does not refer specifically to the use of Scripture, Jesus said (Matthew 10:19; Luke 12:11) that, when His followers would be put on trial, they were not to think beforehand about what to say in their defense, but that the Holy Spirit would give them the words to say.

Shirley H Wife, mother, veteran in the spiritual war we all face!

In Luke chapter four Jesus is being tempted by Satan in the wilderness. In verse 4, Jesus says, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God."

Luke 4:8: "Jesus answered and said to him,'Get behind Me, Satan, for it is written..."

Matthew 4:1-11, in verses 4,7,10 Jesus says, "It is written."

Why should we quote Bible verses? Because they were good enough for Jesus!
