First John 3:23 And this is His commandment, that we should believe on the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another as He gave us commandment.

Eternal life is a free gift from God that we did nothing for. Our rewards in heaven are based on what we do after we have received the free gift. First Corinthians 3:11-15
