Followers of Christ are not to worship any created beings, whether the Apostles, other saints, Mary, or even angels. Everywhere in the Scriptures that someone starts to worship a servant of God, they are told to stop and worship God alone (Acts 10:25–26; 14:13–14; Revelation 19:10; 22:9) Scripture actually forbids worshipping anything created (Exodus 20:4–6; 1 Corinthians 12:1–2; 1 John 5:21) and states clearly that God will punish such actions (Romans 1:24-25) if persisted in and not repented of.

Regarding the passage mentioned in Luke 1:28ff, note that nowhere in the passage does it call on anyone to "worship" Mary, it only notes that she will be called "blessed", translating the Greek word "makarizo", which simply means "to be pronounced blessed'.

And what does being "blessed" mean? The angel answered that question in verse 30, "You have found favor with God."

So no, followers of Christ should not worship Mary. Luke's gospel does not prescribe it, and all of Scripture condemns similar acts. Mary was a wonderful example for us to follow in submitting our will to God's, but her song of worship in verses 46 - 55 call our eyes and hearts upward to the Lord, not to herself.

May the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
