They had a zeal for God but not according to knowledge. They believed they were saved by keeping the law apart from faith in God.

They were trusting in themselves, to be saved by their own merit.

Paul had been one of them. He was a Pharisee.

When their Messiah did come, they rejected Him and said He was doing miracles by the power of Satan.

God gave us His laws to protect us, not to save us. The law was given to show us we are all sinners and could not keep Gods laws.

The book of Acts is the beginning of the church age or dispensation of grace for the free gift of God by faith alone apart from the deeds of the law.

Romans 3:26-28. For He is the just and the justifier of them that believe in Jesus, Where is boasting then? You can not boast in a free gift that we did nothing for. Romans 11;6 And Romans 4:5 Saved by faith alone apart from works.

He came unto His own, and His own received Him not. The Jews were Gods chosen people, but they never accepted Jesus as their savior.

They had degenerated into keeping the law to save themselves. Not realizing that keeping Gods laws can not save sinners.

It goes clear back to Cain and Abel. Abel gave a blood sacrifice for his sin, and Cain tried to be saved by works. God would not accept his works and it angered Cain who then killed his brother.

The grace people will always be hated by the works people. Romans 11:6. We can only be saved by grace apart from any works. Romans 4:5.

Matthew 7:15-23. The wolves in sheep's clothing preach a false gospel of works salvation. We can save our selves and Jesus died in vain.

But the bible says we can only be saved by what Jesus did for us, not by what we do or do not do.

We can do nothing to save ourselves. We can only be saved by what Jesus did for us. All grace, no works.

Jesus said, If they hated me they will hate you too. The free grace people will always be hated by those who trust in their works instead of Jesus finished work on the cross as the only way of salvation by faith alone apart from works.

Gods laws are good, but can not save a sinner. The law was given to show us we are all sinners and need a savior. Jesus died for he sins of the whole world so that any one who would accept His one blood sacrifice for all sin, would be saved.

He paid the debt we owe God and set us free. No longer under the law but under grace.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For By grace ye are saved, (what Jesus did for us) through faith, (the second we believe it) and that not of yourselves, (we did nothing to deserve it) It is the GIFT of God, NOT OF WORKS, LEST ANY MAN SHOULD BOAST.

You can not boast in a free GIFT. The GIFT of God is eternal life. Paid in full by the giver. Saved by faith alone in Jesus alone for the free gift of eternal life. Paid in full. No longer condemned to hell. John 3:18
