I could have wished that my mom could have comforted me with a verse like Psalm 56:3, “Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You [, God]." Because I remember as a teenage boy spending the summers at my grandmother's resort, a haven called "Wisowa," in the Tomahawk, WI, Northwoods. On the porch of what we called "The Old Cottage" I woke up one night crying because I was scared to die (and go to hell), so I asked Mom how I could know I was going to heaven. She couldn't tell me because she didn't know herself!

It was only a few years later that I came to know Christ who quiets all fears because he faced fear and triumphed over it (Hebrews 2:14-15). Hebrews 2:14-15 in The Message Bible, reads:

14-15 Since the children are made of flesh and blood, it’s logical that the Savior took on flesh and blood in order to rescue them by his death. By embracing death, taking it into himself, he destroyed the Devil’s hold on death and freed all who cower through life, scared to death of death.
