Satan (Job 1:6-9; Matt. 4:10)

The title “Satan” occurs 53 times in 47 verses in the Bible. The Greek word is satanas and the Hebrew is satan. The primary idea is ‘adversary, one who withstands.’ It points to Satan as the opponent of God, of believers, and all that is right and good. We should note, however, that Satan often appears as an angel of light promising what is supposed to be good (Gen. 3:1f; 2 Cor 11:14), but it is only a sham to further aid him in his work as the arch enemy and adversary in opposition to God and what is truly good. 

The Bible calls him “Satan”:

“And He [Jesus] was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him [to Jesus].” Mark 1:13

He is also called "the devil" in the New Testament. The word "devil" means "false accuser" or "slanderer." Satan plays this role in Job 1-2 when he attacks Job's character. Satan’s authority is limited as he cannot do more than God allows (Job 1:12). See also Job 2:6; 1Co 10:13; RRev 12:12; Rev 20:3.

The Devil (Matt. 4:1, 5, 9; Eph. 4:27; Rev. 12:9; 20:2).
“Devil” is the Greek word diabolos which means “slanderer, defamer.” This accentuates his goal and work to impugn the character of God. Satan's deceitful work is seen in that he deceives individuals--1 Timothy 2:14 Eve was deceived by Satan the serpent. See also Daniel 8:25; 2 Timothy 3:13; Revelation 12:9; Revelation 20:3,10.

A warning about him is clearly spelled out in 1 Peter 5:8 where he is called “our adversary.” Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” 1 Peter 5:8 here speaks of Satan analogous to a roaring lion. And I’m not even mentioning that “Satan” is analogous also to a wolf (John 10:12).

Also, the Bible speaks further about him being called "Devil":
“He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose, the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” 1 John 3:8 – The Kingdom of Satan is to be destroyed, 2 Sam. 23:6, 7, with context; Matt. 12:29; 13:30; Luke 11:21-22; 1 John 3:8. Satan’s names are a Murderer (Jn 8:44) and Sinner (1 Jn 3:8). Those who are given over to evil and who persuade others to evil are children and servants of Satan (See Mt 16:23; Mk 8:33; Lk 4:8; Jn 6:70; 8:44; Acts 13:10; 1 Jn 3:8). In 1 Jn 3:8, it is said, "To this end was the Son of God manifested, that he might destroy the works of the Devil."

He is called prince of this world, John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11 – But as the prince of this world, he is only called this because his rule is temporary, not absolute: Jn 12:31; Jn 14:30; Jn 16:11. This world is temporary. Again, these titles indicate the temporary nature of Satan's rule: John 14:30; John 16:11; 2 Corinthians 4:4.

He is called "serpent," Gen. 3:4,14; 2 Cor. 11:3 -- The serpent is the adversary because he thwarts spiritual insight: Ge 3:1-5,13; 2 Co 11:3; AND “the spirit that works in the children of disobedience,” Eph. 2:2.

But we mostly refer to Satan as the Devil.

In Hebrews 2:14-15 it is said that Christ took upon Himself human nature in order "that through death he might bring to naught him that had the power of death, that is, the Devil." In 1 Jn 3:8, it is said, "To this end was the Son of God manifested, that he might destroy the works of the Devil. About Luke 11:21-22 -Ryre Study Bible says Luke 11:21The strong man (Lk 11:21) is Satan; the stronger (Lk 11:22) is Christ (Lk 4:18).

Lucifer has many names in which the Bible refers to him by. These are some: Liar, deciever, accuser, Prince of the air, serpent, Baal, Beelzebub and of course Satan. There are many more but this is a brief example.

Satan is a Hebrew noun meaning accuser or adversary. So, it can be very well understood: the job of satan is to test and for that, the one has to be expert in the chosen field. Nonetheless, anything evil has been linked to satan. 

Collective belief is that satan can possess people. Rather than arguing about satan, one should seek divine company. One should start by mediating upon the lord to enlighten the mind.

The lord is knowledge.
