Jesus is the Great Physician because only He is able to fully address the fatal "illness" that affects every individual on earth (no matter how "well" they may seem by all discernible indications) -- the universal separation of humanity from God caused by sin, which has effects not only in this life and world, but on an eternal scale, making it far more damaging than any mere illness of body or mind in this life.

He accomplished this by fully paying the penalty demanded by God for sin through His sinless life, atoning death, and resurrection, so that anyone who places their faith in the redemption that He gained through those actions (rather than in their own imperfect works) can spend eternity in God's presence.

Jesus said "It is not the healthy who need a doctor by the sick. But go and learn what this means, I desire mercy, not sacrifice. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners" (Matthew 9:12-13).

Jesus also involved his disciples in his ministry. "Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness (Matthew 10:1). He told them to go to the lost sheep of Israel, proclaiming this message "The Kingdom of Heaven has come near" and to heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with leprosy, and drive out demons" (Matthew 10:6-8).

When John the Baptist's disciples questioned if Jesus was the one to come, Jesus replied "Go back and report to John what you hear and see: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor." (Matthew 11:4-5).

Healing can come in many forms: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Jesus came to provide healing for our 'Whole Beings" and that is why he is the Great Physician. Our greatest need is spiritual healing, because we all have this terminal cancer called our Sinful Human Nature, which is killing our physical bodies and has already killed our spirits, which are dead and separated from God. 

Physical Healing
Jesus demonstrated his ability and willingness to heal ALL sickness and disease. Christians may experience physical healing in this lifetime, but we know that the glorious new eternal bodies we will receive at the resurrection, will be free from all sickness and disease.

Emotional Healing
Christians are all equal in the kingdom of God. We all receive the same respect, dignity and worth in the sight of God. We are healed from the oppression and suffering we experience in this world.

Mental Healing
Christians are all set free from the lies we have believed from Satan, the deceiver of our souls. We receive the wisdom of God from the Holy Spirit to understand all the truth of God's revelation to us.

Spiritual healing
Christians are born again as new eternal beings when the Holy Spirit comes to live within us.
