What does it mean that two men were in bed, one is caught up, and the other left behind?

Does this scripture refer to two believers who are together spreading the gospel, one was righteous, and the one left behind was unrighteous?

Luke 17:34

ESV - 34 I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed. One will be taken and the other left.

In Luke 17:34-36, Jesus uses symbols to teach simple truths. At the end of time, there will be only two groups of people: the lost and the saved.

Two Men in One Bed: Jesus uses sleep as a symbol of death (John 11:11, 14). On the last day of resurrection, there will be two kinds of people sleeping in the grave - the lost and the saved.

Two Women Grinding Together: a woman in Bible prophecy symbolizes a church (Jer 6:2). Grinding grain represents working with the Word of God. At Christ's return, there will be two kinds of churches - the false and the true. Both will apparently be doing the same thing, but only one will be saved.

Two Men in The Field: the field represents the world (Matt 13:38). When Jesus returns, there will be two kinds of missionaries working in the field - the false and the true (Matt 7:22, 23).

In this passage from Luke 17:24-37 Jesus is talking about his Second Coming. His coming will be like lightning that flashes and lights up the whole sky. He says that people will be carrying on life just like the days of Noah, eating, drinking, and getting married, then the flood came and destroyed them all. It will be just like the days of Sodom, people were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, but as soon as the "righteous people were rescued" fire and sulphur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.

Jesus warns every believer "to watch and be ready" for his coming. Jesus says "don't try to hang on to any possessions from your earthly life, don't look back like Lot's wife [who turned to a pillar of salt], don't try to keep your earthly life or you will not be rescued but will be destroyed. These actions demonstrate no trust in Jesus, no saving faith to be rescued.

Jesus describes how sudden his rescue will be. Two people will be in one bed, one will be taken, one will be left; two women will be grinding grain, one will be taken and the other left. No one will have opportunity to plead for their rescue. Every human being's fate is determined by their decision about Jesus Christ. Every person who puts their faith in Jesus becomes a Christian, a Christ follower, has their name written in the Lamb's book of life, and they are rescued.

After the rescue (rapture) is completed, the Great Tribulation begins, wherein God will punish all the unbelievers who brought evil, wickedness, corruption and decay upon the earth. These trumpet and bowl judgments, will soften the hearts of some remaining people, whom God has called, both Israelites and Gentiles, to put their faith in Jesus, and they will be saved from God's eternal judgment.

Jesus will complete his second coming after the seventh bowl judgment. All believers [Christians and OT Saints] will be judged by Jesus and rewarded for our faithfulness in this life and given our eternal inheritance. All unbelievers will face the "Great White Throne of God's Judgment", their entire life will be examined by God and they will be sentenced to eternal punishment in hell. God's perfect justice requires eternal separation from his presence (eternity in hell) and the degree of punishment (torment) that fits the severity of the crimes [sins].

The Good News is that our guarantee of rescue (if we are not a Christian) is only a few words away. As the apostle Peter said, as he was slipping into the water:

LORD! SAVE ME! and it was done.
