The answer to the question will be different depending on where in the world we're talking about.

In the US, we have seen a dramatic decline during the last few decades, of church attendance in general and mainline church attendance in particular. The same forces that resulted in Europe turning largely secular today seem to be finding their way west into the US as postmodern ideas gain further foothold in society. We have to pray that this is a trend that will somehow change, and that God's Spirit will move powerfully in this country again.

If we look overseas, though, it looks like the global center of Christianity, once exclusively in the west, has now shifted back toward the east, as African Protestant Christianity has seen astounding growth in the last few years. Also, South Korea has a very substantial protestant population, and sends out the highest per capita number of missionaries of any country in the world.

While things in the US aren't so great right now, I wouldn't say, when thinking globally, that protestant churches are dying. We are in a time of transition, from when the US was the place where all the missionaries came from, to a time when churches in many countries send missionaries to us.

Yes. 100,000,000 of us in the USA profess Jesus as Savior. One third of those have never seen the inside of a church building. One third of those don't attend regularly and really don't know what it means to be born again. The remaining one-third are being blasted by the anti-Christian forces slamming us in our towns, cities, counties, states, and from Washington, D.C., forbidding us to worship as WE see fit, not as the ACLU dictates and our so-called President endorses.

Abortion is rampant. Drugs are rampant. 40% of couples living together are not married, and that includes Christians. Homosexuals are invited into worship services in certain denominations. TV evangelism is draining the public dry of money needed for paying bills, in the name of a 40, 60, 100% return on their "investment," a new car, a new home, all bills miraculously paid, illness and disease being wiped out, healings at meetings like those of Benny Hinn being shown fraudulent again and again and again.

The authentic Body of Christ will have plenty of room when we are caught up to meet Him in the air. No running in to each other, that's for sure.
