In what sense do the meek "inherit" the earth (Matthew 5:5)?

Matthew 5:5 says, "Blessed are the meek,
    for they will inherit the earth.(D)

Experts say Jesus was basing his beatitude on Psalm 37:11.  What is Psalm 37:11 referring to?
