Even in the Old Testament, as indicated in Habakkuk 2:4, and as cited by Paul in Romans 1:17, salvation was based on faith. However, as noted by James in James 2:14-26, as well as by the examples discussed in Hebrews 11, that inner faith then served as the basis for outward actions (including obedience to the Mosaic Law) that provided visible evidence of it.

The Old Testament way of salvation includes the following conditions:

1. Faith
believe that God’s word in the Old Testament is True and they need to trust it with their lives

2. Repent
confess their sins and turn away from them with all their heart

3. Sacrifice
make the prescribed sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins (every time they became aware they had sinned they must make the sacrifice). God accepts their sacrifice based on the repentance and faith.

4. Obedience
they demonstrate their salvation by obeying God’s laws from the heart

As a comparison to Christianity:

1) our faith is in the New Testament revelation of Jesus Christ as Son of God and Saviour of the world

2) repentance is the same

3) Jesus became the one-time sacrifice for all sin. When we accept Jesus as personal saviour all our sins are forgiven

4) we obey the commands of Jesus and the whole counsel of the New Covenant (New Testament) to demonstrate our salvation and live a God-pleasing life.
