Paul wrote Colossians in response to a heresy in the Christian congregation at Colosse that was attempting to blend Gnostic philosophy (which viewed matter as evil) and Judaism with Christian theology. This heresy regarded the God of Christianity as a lesser deity, since it was not understood how a supreme holy God could have been responsible for the creation of evil matter.

These heretics also rejected the divinity of Jesus. Paul specifically warned the Colossians against this rejection, telling them that Jesus possessed all the fullness of God in bodily form. Because of this, Jesus was also able to atone for the sin of all humankind through His substitutionary death.

Paul encouraged the Colossians to keep their minds focused on spiritual matters, and on the ultimate goal of spending eternity in God's presence. He further offered guidance on Christian conduct in human relationships, including with family members and other believers, particularly in avoiding petty disputes that would hinder the dissemination of the gospel message. He also stressed the importance of believers displaying love and forgiveness in their lives, and being ruled by the peace of Christ.

There is so much in that book that it is hard to glean it all. 2:13 Reinforces the gospel, that He has forgiven us all trespasses. Past, present and future. Romans 4:6-8. John 3:18 We can no longer be condemned to hell. 

It also goes against legalism. 2:16 Let no man, therefore, judge you in food, or in drink, or in a feast day, or of a new moon, or of a Sabbath day. 

2:20-23 Why do you obey the doctrines of men. Touch not, taste not, handle not. Just because one person believes drinking alcohol in moderation is a sin, does not mean we have to. But it makes some feel more righteous than others and only feeds the flesh. 

Colossians 3:3 We are dead and our life is hidden with Christ. 3:4 When Christ, who is our life shall appear, then shall ye also appear with Him in glory. 

Colossians 3:6 If we continue living in fornication and covetousness, the wrath of God comes on the Sons of disobedience. God does chasten His children. His children. John 1:12 and Romans 1:16. We can not lose eternal life or that would make God a liar, John 3:18, but we still reap what we sow in this life and in heaven. First Corinthians 3:11-21.

God can not bless His children that are living out of his will.

Colossians is such a practical book, full of good advice for daily living, and good resources to help others.

How you ever wondered what to pray for your Christian friends and local church. God would be most pleased if you pray these exact words from Colossians 1:9-14:
For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

What would you say to someone who says that Jesus was not God but just a good moral teacher? You could share these words from Colossians 1:15-20:
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Have you ever wondered what a spiritually mature Christian looks like? Paul paints a beautiful picture for us in Colossians 3:12-17
- Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience
- Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone
- Over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 
- Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts
- Be thankful. 
- Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly
- Teach and admonish one another with all wisdom 
- Sing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And 
- Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

May I suggest a semi-alliterated outline that helps me learn practical lessons: 

Ruled by the Peace of God
Colossians 3:14-15
14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. 
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. 

Among other "clothing" in regard to the believer's spiritual apparel, he is to put on forgiveness and love (Col. 3:13-14), which would lead to peace. (God's peace and thankfulness are spoken of in Col. 3:15).

Filled by the Word of God
Colossians 3:16-17 The believer is also to "put on" the words of Christ.

Guided by the Wisdom of God
Colossians 4:5-6 If the Colossians are guided by the wisdom of God, they would be fruitful.
