What is the sign of the Son of Man mentioned in Matthew 24:30?

I am confused about what the sign of the Son of Man is. Is it the destruction of Israel?

Matthew 24:30

ESV - 30 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

I believe that this sign is...Zechariah 14:4, "And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east..."

I think this because Acts 1:9-11 says,"Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked up steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, 'Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.'"

Again, in Revelation 1:7, "Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, AMEN."

I pray all are watching and waiting. He is coming very soon! Come Lord Jesus!

Although there has been a wide range of interpretations proposed for the wording in the cited verse, the sign spoken of, in my opinion, is not separate from Jesus, or an event that accompanies His return or is a precursor of it, but instead refers to the appearance of Jesus Himself in the heavens at the time of His return in glory. To me, this is most persuasively indicated not only by the close linkage of the two in the verse, but also by the verse's association or correspondence with the wording of Daniel 7:13.

I've always understood the sign of the Son of Man in Matthew 24:30 to be the lightning of v. 27 (Matthew 24:27). Others, admittedly, believe it's the Shekinah, or glory, of Christ; still, others leaving it unspecified. In any case, the Son of man Himself will come visibly (Revelation 1:7).

If you read verse 29 you will see it is His second coming to earth at the end of the tribulation.

Not for the church which will be taken out before the tribulation. We go to meet Him in the clouds at the rapture of the church.

First Corinthians 15:51 thru 53 and First Thessalonians 4:13 thru 18.

The church, those saved by grace through faith alone, are the bride of Christ and God does not want a battered bride.

First Corinthians 15:1-4 That Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures, that He was buried and rose again on the third day, according to the scriptures.

When we believe that gospel we are sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise. Ephesians 1:13-14 Our guarantee of eternal life.

John 6:40 And this is the will of Him who sent me, that ALL that seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have everlasting life, and I will raise him up on the last day. John 3:18

The sign is clearly identified in Rev. 6:15-16 where it says, "Hide us from the face of him that sittieth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb." Yet how can we be certain that the face of him that sittieth on the throne is the sign of the Son of man in heaven? Let us compare the verses in Matthew chapter 24 to the verses in Revelation chapter 6 and this should remove any doubts we have, as the description and the sequence of the events is identical.

Similarities:

1) Sun becomes dark and the moon does not shine
Compare Matthew 24:29 to Revelation 6:12
2) Stars fall from heaven
Compare Matthew 24:29 to Revelation 6:13
3) Powers of the heavens will be shaken
Compare Matthew 24:29 to Revelation 6:14
4) Then the sign of the son of man will appear in heaven
Compare Matthew 24:30 to Revelation 6:15-16
5) Then shall all the tribes mourn
Compare Matthew 24:30 to Revelation 6:16-17

Thus one can now conclude with confidence that "the face of him that sitteth on the throne" in Rev. 6:16 is "the sign of the Son of man in heaven" in Matthew 24:30.

But what you don't realize is that not only have I proved that the sign of the son of man is seeing the face of the one sitting on the throne I have also shown you exactly when the rapture in Matt. 24 will occur in the Revelation timeline. The rapture occurs at the time of the sixth seal, which in fact occurs concurrently with the seventh trumpet. Compare 6th seal to seventh trumpet for several similarities including the resurrection.

My opinion is that the sign will be like the other signs in heaven. For example in Revelation 12:1 it says, "And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars." It is talking about the birth of Christ. This actually happened in September 11, 3 BC. The constellation Virgo rose over Jerusalem with the sun in the middle and the moon under her feet and the 12 stars above her head.

There are several books showing that the gospel story is written in the constellations. “The Glory of the Stars” by E. Raymond Capt is one. In Psalms 19:1 it says, "The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament showeth his handiwork."
