Were Adam and Eve real people or just myths? (Genesis 1:27)

Genesis 1:27 "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them."

To me, the most persuasive indication of the actual existence of Adam and Eve as individuals is contained in the various genealogies in the Bible of people whose lives or existences have not been subject to such uncertainty, and whose ancestry traces back to them. I find the lineages traced in 1 Chronicles, as well as the mention of Adam as part of Jesus' genealogy in Luke's gospel, particularly compelling in that regard.

The first chapters of Genesis are the base for the rest of the Bible – everything that Christians believe starts with these chapters. And if we doubt the authenticity of Creation and contest the reality of Adam and Eve, everything else would crumble like a house of cards.

Here we learn how God created the world and all that is in it, finishing with Adam and Eve (Gen. 1:26-28). Genesis also introduces the Sabbath, marriage, the origin of evil Messiah and the plan of redemption (Gen. 3:15). If the seven days of creation are not literal but explained as some sort of allegory or metaphor, then the rest of the Bible makes little sense.

All later biblical writers confirmed earlier writings providing additional information. In Romans Paul writes about sin and salvation (Rom. 5:12). But if we believe in a Darwinian evolutionary process over millions of years where death was present prior to humanity, then the origin of sin, Christ’s plan of salvation and His death on the cross is meaningless. If death is not the result of sin, then the wages of sin cannot be death (Rom. 6:23), and Christ would have had no reason to die for our sins. The first Adam is tied to the last Adam (1 Cor 15:45, 47). A belief in evolution, even if some form of intelligent design is inserted into the process, would destroy the basis of Christianity.

The belief of Adam and Eve is critical to the Bible story of salvation. Atheists make the point that evolution has shown that Adam and Eve did not exist and then therefore conclude, quite logically, that was no original sin and therefore no need of a Savior. However they were wrong because:

1. If humankind is about 200,000 years in existence, secular scientists have concluded that we should now be extinct because of known inter-generational mutation rates.
2. Adam and Eve on leaving Eden were mutation-free, hence their long lifespans of about 900 years and permissible close relative intermarrying.
3. Mitochondrial and Y-chromosome mutational studies indicate we have been on planet earth about 6,000 years, consistent with biblical genealogies.
4. Evolution or biological change from one animal kind to another (e.g. cat to dog) just cannot happen. DNA/genetics will not permit it.
