As mentioned before they are included in the genealogies as real people.
The mind likes to simplify things, and one way it does that is to put an "or" where an "and" belongs. Adam was symbolic, or Adam was a real person, that's easier for our brains. Adam was both a person AND a symbol involves more work, but it is true.
Nothing is too difficult for the Lord.

My view is that St. Paul believed it. (The Bible). -- Paul said that “Adam was formed first, then Eve” (1 Tim. 2:13–14) reveals that he speaks of a real person. The Bible said it. I believe it. And that settles it for me.
