As John 21:19 (the verse following the verse cited in the question) notes, Jesus was indicating by these words the type of death that Peter was to die -- that is, that he would be made a prisoner by the Roman authorities as a result of his preaching of the gospel, and subsequently led out by them to a place to which he did not wish to go (that is, to a location where he would be put to death by the state). (Although his death is not specifically recorded in the Bible, the writings of the early church historians Tertullian and Origen indicate that he was crucified, but that he was affixed to the cross in an upside-down position at his own request, because he said that he was not worthy to die in the same manner as Jesus had.) (Also, although John did not specifically record Peter's martyrdom in his gospel, John would have known what happened to Peter at the time (very late in his long life) that he wrote his gospel, since John was the last of all the apostles to die.)
