I would say that the primary means by which God guides us are 1) by His expressed will and commands as contained in the Bible; 2) by indications of His will as given through events and in response to prayer; 3) through the counsel of others (especially fellow Christians) whom we know and trust; and 4) by shielding us or steering us away (including in ways we may never realize or know of in this life) from influences or circumstances that would be detrimental to either our spiritual or physical well-being.

When I was a young man seeking God's guidance for my life, I can remember a pool party that my dad had for some fellow church members in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was a gathering at night around his swimming pool but I don't know that anyone swam. One man, probably a friend of my dad but I knew of him at least, said, "Jack, I want you to read a book, Does Guide Still Guide?. It is by J. Sidlow Baxter (often subtitled Or, More Fully, What are the Essentials of Guidance and Growth in the Christian Life) is a classic Christian book exploring how God directs believers' lives. It emphasizes biblical, practical, and spiritual guidance. In the Scriptures I can find two ways that God guides us:

1. With His good Spirit:

(a) He leads us on level ground after prayer (Psalm 143:8-10) [Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God!
Let your good Spirit lead me
on a level ground!] --Psalm 143:10

(b) and upholds faith amid trials (Luke 22:31-32).

2. In providence for His name:

(a) He gathers us safely (Jeremiah 32:37-42),

(b) makes darkness light (Isaiah 42:16),

(c) and pardons to show mercy (Micah 7:18-19; Ephesians 1:6).

Dr. J. Vernon McGee said,
"Now notice something else David said here, 'He leads me in the paths of righteousness.' David learned that God leads only in the paths of righteousness. A young fellow who was living with a girl, not married to her, talked to me. He said, 'I want to know what God’s will is for my life.' Since he claimed he was a Christian, I figured he should know that he and his girlfriend were violating God’s Word and will, so I said, 'I can tell you clearly: "He leads me in the paths of righteousness!'” And if God is leading you, my friend, He won’t lead you into sin. He never will. The Lord tempts no one to do evil, never does. He will not lead you except in paths of righteousness. Do you want to know whether you are in God’s will? If you are in sin, just put it down right now—you are not in the will of God because He leads in the paths of righteousness." (See David: A Man After God's Own Heart)
