I would say that it was because the woman had requested that Jesus give her the living water of which He had spoken, but she was still apparently dealing with the subject on a literal, physical level. Before she could be receptive to the type of spiritual renewal of which Jesus was speaking, she first had to acknowledge and confront the sin in her own life that was standing in the way of a relationship with God. Rather than directly accusing and condemning her in that regard, Jesus chose to deal with the issue by leading her to personally acknowledge her current status, and, even then, dealt with her situation by commending her for truthfully telling Him that she had no husband, while at the same time revealing to her His supernatural knowledge of her actual situation. This, in turn, led to Jesus being able to deal with her (and eventually with many other people in the town through her testimony) on a spiritual level, resulting in them acknowledging Him as Christ and Savior.
