Humility is always putting others before self.

The perfect example of humility comes from Jesus who, though He was God chose to become human for humanity's sake.

Given the natural human condition it is quite impossible to be humble without assistance from the Holy Spirit. Faith in the sufficiency of God's grace as St Paul said in Corinthians 12:7-10 is a great enabler for humility.

In other words, humility is of God and can only come from God.

The more that you can move your thoughts and actions away from an inward focus on yourself, and on your own wants, needs, and accomplishments -- or away from an attitude that leads you to look down on any other person -- and toward an outward focus on God, and on the needs of other people, the more humble you will become. Jesus' parable of the Pharisee and the publican in Luke 18:10-14, and His teaching on the occasion of dining at the Pharisee's house (Luke 14:7-11) come to mind in that regard, as do Paul's words in Philippians 2:1-11 about the way in which Jesus serves as our example of humility by the way in which He humbled Himself. 

Also, humility is not incompatible with retaining a sense of self-worth. The Bible commands us to love our neighbors AS OUSELVES (emphasis added). As the English Christian apologist C. S. Lewis put it, "Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less."

Lewis also said in his excellent book Mere Christianity, “Do not imagine that if you meet a really humble man he will be what most people call 'humble' nowadays: he will not be a sort of greasy, smarmy person, who is always telling you that, of course, he is nobody. Probably all you will think about him is that he seemed a cheerful, intelligent chap who took a real interest in what you said to him. If you do dislike him it will be because you feel a little envious of anyone who seems to enjoy life so easily. He will not be thinking about humility: he will not be thinking about himself at all.”

In the epistle written to the saints in Philippi, apostle Paul says in 2:5, "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus."

This is the work of the Holy Spirit, our minds must be renewed as believers to have the mind of Christ. I encourage you to read Philippians 2:1-11 and also Romans 12:1-2.

I believe humility is a mindset and an attitude of the heart. I am speaking about the regenerated heart and mind. It is a continual work of the Holy Spirit coupled with the Word of God. Finally, Ephesians 4:22-24 reads as follows: "That you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lust, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. Humility comes from the Spirit of Christ, and is definitely not a work of the flesh!

Psalm 145:17, "The Lord is righteous in all His ways, 
Gracious in all His works.
18, The Lord is near to all who call upon Him in truth."

John 14:6, "Jesus said unto him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'"

In our human state we tend to think of ourselves as pretty smart, fair, kind and loving. We become proud sometimes even arrogant. We sometimes think we know better than God, we have a better solution. God does not care!

In our self-righteous state, we deny that God is fair. He knows the beginning and the end. Jesus is The Only Way, The Truth, The Life. We make Him one of many ways. We get so full of ourselves that we refuse to recognise that it is not about me! It is All About Him!

We must admit, we don't have all the answers. Only God does. He alone is Holy, merciful, loving, powerful. We have to submit to Him, His wisdom. Pray to Him, ask for forgiveness of our self- righteous attitude. Admit that He is God, offer the worship He deserves, and praise His Holy Name.

In my experience true humility comes in acknowledging that every blessing we experience on earth comes from the mighty hand of God. This includes our achievements, creation, healing, joy, peace, forgiveness, love, faith, redemption, mercy, salvation and many other blessings to numerous to recall or fully comprehend. 

All praise and honor and glory to our almighty God, Father and Savior Jesus Christ.

Jesus gave us a great example of humility by washing his disciples' feet. This was the job of the lowest servant in the household. It was the dirtiest and most disgusting job in Jewish society. Listen to Jesus' dialogue with his disciples when he does this:

“So he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them (John 13:4-17).

The apostle Paul said in Romans 12:3:
“For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.”

What is sober judgment? Here are some thoughts:
I am saved by the grace and mercy of God
I am a servant of the Lord sent to bless people
I can do nothing good unless I stay connected to Jesus
I only have wisdom because the Holy Spirit is my teacher
I only have power because the Holy Spirit lives in me
I only love because God first loved me

The way the humbling is done is brought out uniquely in the NET (New English Translation): 5:6 And God will exalt you in due time, if you humble yourselves under his mighty hand 5:7 by casting all your cares on him because he cares for you.

It's through prayer that we humble ourselves!
