How do we "share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ"? (2 Thessalonians 2:14)

13 But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits[b] to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14 He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15 So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings[c] we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.

16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.

2 Thessalonians 2:13 - 17

ESV - 13 But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. 14 To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In my opinion, by speaking of "sharing" Christ's glory, Paul is making a comment similar to the sentiment that John expressed in 1 John 3:2, when he said that believers will be like Christ in eternity for they shall see Him as He is (that is, in the glorified state that is His as a result of the completed mission of redemption that He achieved). He performed that mission on our behalf, so that we might also eternally partake (which, in my opinion, comes closest to the intent of the word "share") of the same immortal nature in our glorified bodies that He possesses (although we will owe the fact that we are able to do that entirely to Him).

We will also "share" in the glory of the victory that Christ won through our being the evidence or "fruit" of it.

How do we "share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ"?

2 Thessalonians 2:14 ESV Bible: “Whereunto he called you through our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ."

We "share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ" through the process of salvation, which begins with God's calling through the gospel, and includes present-day actions like standing firm in faith and future hope of glorification with Christ. It involves living a life that reflects God's character, expressed through sharing the gospel, practising forgiveness, and demonstrating love and kindness to others.

1: The ability to share in Christ's glory is not earned by human merit, but is a result of God's sovereign initiative and grace.

2: Called through the Gospel: God calls people to salvation through the message of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection. Believing in this truth is the entry point into this shared destiny.

3: Union with Christ: Through faith, believers are united with Christ, becoming children and co-heirs with Him. This union is the basis for the promise of sharing in His inheritance, which includes glory.

Sharing in Christ's glory begins in the present life through the work of the Holy Spirit, transforming believers to reflect Christ's character.

1: Sanctification by the Spirit: Believers are set apart (sanctified) by the Holy Spirit, which is a process of growing in holiness and becoming more like Christ.

2: Reflecting Christ's image: As believers "with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory," they are "being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory". This involves daily spiritual habits such as:

3: Gazing on His face: Regularly engaging with Scripture to understand Christ's nature and work, allowing the Holy Spirit to provide internal illumination.

4: Listening to His voice: Obeying God's commandments and paying attention to the teachings of Jesus.

5: Walking in His steps: Living a life of self-denial, taking up one's cross daily, and following Christ's example of humble service.

6: Sharing in His sufferings: A key aspect of sharing in Christ's glory is also sharing in His suffering. Present trials and afflictions, when endured with an eternal perspective, are seen as "light and momentary" and as "producing for us an eternal weight of glory.”

7: Emulating Christ: This is seen through actions like confessing sin, forgiving others, trusting God, and producing spiritual "fruit". The idea is that our lives become a "portrait of the gospel.”

8: A message of assurance: The verse serves as a message of encouragement, reminding believers that the same God who called them to salvation will also complete His work in their lives.

Conclusion:

Essentially, the way to "share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ" is through a life of faith, sanctification, endurance in suffering, and obedience to the gospel, all of which lead to the promised eternal glorification with Him.

Paul also reminds his readers that God used the good news of salvation to call them for a purpose. He called them to share the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In the context of the letter, which addresses confusion and persecution, this verse assures believers of a secure position and a magnificent destiny. This hope should motivate them to stand firm in the apostolic teachings and live a life of holiness and truth (2 Thessalonians 2:15).
