How can I learn to claim God's promises?

We appropriate God’s promises by learning them through reading and memorization, by seeing our need for them through meditative prayer, and by giving God time to work them out in our daily experience.

But what else?

The only other thing that I can think of is recognizing (or learning to recognize through prayer, thought, and experience) the occasions when those promises can be claimed and put to use (that is (as stated in the question), when God is working out those promises in our daily experience), and then acting on those promises.
